I have talked with a lot of magicians over the years and the vast majority find it very challenging to get shows and equally important to get shows at prices that will allow them to make a decent income.

Some would LOVE to go FULLTIME but are simply worried they will not make enough money to support themselves and or family.

The BIG THING nowadays is to use Facebook Ads, Google Ads and EVERYTHING in BETWEEN to get people to contact you for shows. Can it work? Of course, BUT do you know how many performers I have talked with that have LOST GIGS because of the internet.

If used incorrectly the internet puts YOU directly next to EVERYBODY that does exactly what you do. How tempted do you think someone looking for a magician will be to click on another link just to see what this person offers. Exactly very tempted! When they do find a couple of acts they often times try to get the performers to bid against each other by saying something along the lines of:

“The other person said they will do it for this price – what will you do it for”

Companies like Facebook and Google are CONSTANTLY changing the rules of the game.

Just when you think you have it down they

change something and your business is screwed!

On the other side of the coin you have agents and online booking agencies promising to get you the gigs. I recently had one of these online agents call me out of the blue to TRY and book me for a gig.

Honestly, I’m not sure HOW ON EARTH they found me BUT whatever. While talking with the guy aka the online agent he offers me $150 to drive 6 hours round trip and

perform for two and half hours of walk around magic.

I said “WHAT, ARE YOU JOKING” He was VERY POLITE and said this is what we pay our performers. I get it sometimes you have to do what it takes to get some money but this is just plain ROBBERY.

Now let’s talk about traditional agents. I have worked with some good ones over the years BUT the big challenge with agents is you are putting your ability to provide for your family in the hands of someone else. If they go out of business all of sudden you go out of business. Or perhaps they decide to book a different act you are out of business.

Here are two agent stories for you –

First Story - Performer charges the agent $200 to perform at a show. The client gives the check to the performer by mistake AND the performer discovers the agent was getting $800 on top of the two hundred dollars. YEP the gig was for $1000 and the agent made four times as much as the performer. WOW! How many times do you think this happens but the performer never finds out. Here is your answer A TON!

Second Story – An agent I was working for took 6 months to pay me for a gig. I found out he was taking the deposits / payments to live his life and was hoping to make up for it with the next gig. So, he was ALWAYS BEHIND. I mentioned this to a fellow performer and this is very common.

Even if you decide to avoid online ads the internet agents and traditional agents come with their own set of problems.

I been told many times the biggest names in magic NEVER figured out how to make a great living performing magic. If these guys can’t do it what chance does anybody have.

I know performers that have been forced to drive UBER just to keep the bills paid. And just so you know this is not just happening to magicians.

I recently had a conversation with a VERY WELL-KNOWN comedian who had to take a job at a fast food restaurant to keep the lights on. This is someone with MAJOR T.V. credits and an amazing career. But here was the problem. Her business was very dependent on agents and in her case the agents went into a different direction.

If you do absolutely nothing that’s no good because

you want to make money while performing.

It is extremely difficult to figure out the right path to take in the land of smoke and mirrors. Until now.

What I have discovered is a way for you to book more shows for more money in the markets of your choice.

ü You will never need to use the internet in the same way everyone else uses it to try and get shows.

ü You will never worry about taking those low fees from the internet agencies.

ü You will never have to worry about needing someone else to book the shows for you.

What I’m going to show you does not follow the traditional path. I have major twists on the majority of how you should get booked.

I want you to imagine your still not performing as often as you like, your still not raising your fees, you’re not growing the way you know you can if you had a system that worked.

Here is a bit of my story and more importantly there are some great marketing / mindset lessons and how I came to discover my system for booking shows.

I was the 9th child to a single mom so I was given up for adoption at birth I was lucky to be adopted at the age of two however because I was being abused I was removed from the adoptive home and placed back in California's Child Welfare System from there I lived in numerous foster homes and group homes until I was eighteen.

During this time in my life I was going through some serious personal challenges, however I was able to focus on a gift given to me before I was placed back in foster care.

When I was five years old my adoptive father taught me a simple magic trick. The art of magic gave me something positive to focus on while I was being shuffled from home to home.

After serving a brief stint in the United States Air Force and working a few odd jobs I decided to make my dream come true. My goal was to travel the world entertaining audiences with magic.

After my service in the Air Force I moved back to San Diego. I started driving a cab. One day while driving the cab I realized I was near one of the foster homes I lived in.

I remember this family always telling me my life would never amount to anything. I was at the corner and now at a cross roads in my life.

I was determined this family would not be correct. I thought to myself I’m not performing magic here I am a cab driver, something needed to change in a major way.

I went down to the Grey Hound bus station and purchased a one-way ticket from San Diego to Atlanta Georgia and said “I’ll figure it out when I get there.”

I arrived in Atlanta to make my dream come true of becoming full time magician I FAILED in a BIG WAY!

After asking some questions I kept hearing I needed to learn how to sell and market myself. Even when I thought I could not afford to do it I invested in myself and bought everything I could on sales and marketing. Some of it worked some of it was a complete failure.

Also, during this time magician David Harkey and I published the book Ah-HA! A Collection of Magical Presentations. David mentioned to me if I wanted to sell the book I would need to

set up some magic lectures.

I noticed very quickly how easy it was to book a lecture compared to a show. I asked myself why is it so easy to book a lecture compared to booking a show. And then it hit me I was giving MAGIC TO MAGICIANS. Translated that means I was giving a precise audience EXACTLY what they wanted.

I then asked a very important question; how can I give the audiences I was trying to book shows with exactly what they wanted in order to book the show.

And that is when I had a major breakthrough. I realized every time I followed a certain process I booked more shows for more money and the shows where much easier to get booked.

And that’s is when my magic life changed I went from doing shows for a few hundred dollars to booking shows for much more money. AND the process worked for kid shows, adult shows, corporate shows etc.

Naturally, there are performers that make way more money as magicians and mentalists. For me and from where I started this was a big deal for me.

Full Disclosure some shows I get are more and other are less. I’m consistently in the $3500 - $5000-dollar range when I go out for an event. With that said I don’t know you or your work ethic. You might get way more or way less I have no clue and I’m not promising you this is what you will get.

Here's what you're going to discover. First, I'm going to talk about a target market and why this is so important. I'm still surprised to this day how many people really don't take advantage of it the way they should. I'm also going to talk about how to take-off in a particular market.

How to become somewhat of a celebrity in your market. How to create leverage in that market. How to be seen as an expert in that particular market. How to take-off in that market. Then I'm going to talk to you about how to get the money. How to take in the money and how to get paid in a particular market.

I will unpack each one separately.

Let's talk about the Target Market.

I did a marketing workshop lecture series about a decade ago now. I did some of these lectures, one of which was at Denny & Lees Magic Studio.

I was always amazed because people would come up, they hand me their business cards and they say, I always saw the same thing over and over again. Everybody was trying to be all things to all people.

Their websites would say, “I do corporate events, I do bar mitzvahs, I do birthday parties and I do this.” The problem with that is you need to think about it just like we

think about a magic effect.

To make a magic effect very powerful what we must do is make it very clear for the audience. When you make it clear and effective it becomes powerful. Your marketing is the exact same way. You have to make it crystal clear for people.

In your prospects mind they’re either saying this consciously or unconsciously, “What is it this person is really about?” You want to think about it in terms of a brain surgeon. That's what they specialize in, and they make more money because they specialize.

The General Practitioner Makes Less Money

Because They're a Little Bit All Over The Place.

What is it that you specialize in and you got a target market. When I initially started to think about this concept, I was all over the place, and then I narrowed my world.

When I shrunk my world a little bit, a couple things happened. It was easier to book shows. I'm a fairly quick learner so I shrink my world even more. I would shrink my target market (my world) a little bit more and I realized I would make more money and I kept making the target market smaller I made more money and it was easier.

I know this is completely counterintuitive to what a lot of people think they got to do. When you do this you get crystal clear about what you're doing, you get very—(clear) about what you're going after. It becomes easy to locate the audience you're going after because your target marketing.

It gets really easy to start to find these people. In addition to that when you wake up that morning you know exactly what you're doing, you're not all over the place. You're not doing this doing this doing this, you know exactly what you're doing.

Here’s The Beautiful Thing!

Here's what I love about target marketing. You could have multiple target markets. There's nothing wrong with bar mitzvah. There's nothing wrong with doing birthday parties. There's nothing wrong with doing corporate shows. There's nothing wrong with doing all of that stuff.

However, what you want to do is you want to present it to your prospects, your soon-to-be clients separately, you want to present it to them separately because when you do that it gets really clear for them and they start to understand what you're about.

When I first understood this idea of target marketing I was performing one day and I ran into

a gentleman he came up to me and said “Would you like to work a country-club?” I said, “Sure!

The show was about a week away it was it pretty quick. He was in the audience and he called me back again and he said, “Eric would you like to do another a country club? Are you open in this date?” I said, “Yeah,

I would love to do another country club.” Well, I found out that this guy was an agent and he specialized in booking country clubs, that's all he did. And over the next two or three years, I did probably a couple hundred of these country clubs primarily in South East, some different parts of the country but primarily the southeastern part of the United States.

At the time, this became my bread and butter market. Side Note - I think you need different types of markets. You need a bread and butter market. A bread and butter market is some place you can go make some money fairly quickly. You also need a midterm market something you're moving towards without giving up the other market. And finally, you need your long-term market, this is what you want to end up doing.

With that said NEVER Turn

My Nose Up at An Opportunity.

If I choose not to do a show it’s not based on ego. One thing I found is people that do that they find themselves in a particular situation and now they end up doing what they said they would never do. I just don't go there.

Narrow your focus to a single target market. Again, I know it’s counterintuitive to what you want to do because the mindset is, “The more people I talk to the more shows I'll get.” When in reality is the smaller you make your market the more shows you will get. The smaller you make the opportunity the bigger you stand out.

I have a 14-point insanely profitable market checklist. Here are 4 of the 14 on the list.

1. Do they have someplace you can perform. By this I mean some sort of event. Birthday party, conference etc.

2. Do they bring in people for these events? Are they accustom to paying for something at the event? Like a cake for a birthday party.

3. Do they have money? No sense in going after a group that can not pay you.

4. Can you reach them? If you can’t find them you can market to them.

I found an incredible target market that was great. They would build the shows around my schedule. They would pay pretty good money. The shows were in a particular area, they weren't very difficult to get to. There was a lot of them that I could book. They hit every single point on the checklist except the last one. They were very difficult to reach and trust me I tried everything.

Here's how you TAKE OFF in a market. First you got to become incredible and then you are seen as credible.

· You should use testimonials.

· You should have promotional videos. I’m not talking about how most people put together a video.

· You should have physical packages that go out in the mail.

· You should have website(s).

Because you want to be seen as incredible, you must position yourself properly.

Here is the BIG ONE. How much sense does it make for you to be in the market that you're in? The more sense it makes for you to be in a particular market the more money you make the easier it is to book the shows.

I will say it again. The more sense it makes for you to be in a market the easier it is to book the shows. It has to make sense. You must answer this question for your soon-to-be clients, because they're either asking this consciously or unconsciously.

Why is this person in this market? You must have an excellent answer to that question. When you have an excellent answer to the question this is the key that opens the vault.

When you do this properly you are not seen as interchangeable. As you can see the check below is for $700. The reason I wanted to point this out is this. I only work with two agents that will book me for about five gigs a year between them. Everything else is booked through my company. I’m always blessed to do the gigs I love her.

But I'm very clear about how she sees me. She likes what I do but I'm also seen as

interchangeable to her. If she calls me and I can't do the event, she will call somebody else and they're going to do it.

What you want is when they call you, you can't do the event the client chooses not to have your particular skill set at the event because that's how much they want you. You don't want to be seen as interchangeable. If you’re interchangeable, one person is as good as the next.

When that happens, that suppresses price in a BIG WAY. Think about it terms of shopping for tomatoes at the grocery store, for the most part one is as good as the other. YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SEEN AS TOMATOES. You must not be seen as interchangeable you have to be seen as unique.

The Marketing Lesson I Learned That

Forever Changed How I Dealt with Clients.

One day I'm going through some of the information in my promotional package, as I’m reading the cover letter in my promotional package I get a bit choked up because I realized one of the reasons I was not having the success I thought I should have.

Here are a couple of sentences from the cover letter.

“Here's the information I promised I would send you. I really enjoyed our conversation. Thank you so much for calling me concerning this show that you want to book me for. I discussed price with you however if the price that I mentioned doesn't necessarily work for you please call me back and we'll talk about it, we'll figure it out.”

While reading the letter I realized I was a Wimp. I was begging the prospect for an opportunity. By presenting myself in this particular way, I was putting myself into a place weakness. When the prospect read that portion of the letter what do you think it said to them. This guy is desperate for work. Of course, they are going to negotiate because I was negotiating with myself.

Two Things You Should Never Forget

1. Clients must feel totally confident that they hired the right person.

2. Don’t be afraid of losing / turning down work. The money is not yours until it clears the bank.

Here is how I've changed this around?

This is What I Currently Say to My Clients, Whether it's on the Phone, in a Letter, or Video

“Chances are you're considering other magicians for your event and my schedule changes daily and because of that I do not put any dates on hold. When you want to move forward with the event call me ASAP so I could block out your date on my schedule and we can move forward with the confirmation process.”

The difference is AMAZING! I have completely changed the game by presenting myself that way. I'm seen as somebody that's busy. What's beautiful about this is it doesn't matter if you're busy or not, its psychology.

I changed everything about how I was presenting myself to my clients and again it was a huge change in my business.

When you target your market, you explain to people why you're in the market. You position yourself properly. You have a very strong foundation to get exactly what you want out of your magic business.

1. Now you want to start to build marketing campaigns around your target market. Why you're in your target market and you're positioning in your target market.

2. The next step is you want to send these marketing campaigns out. Now, I always get the question, “What's the best thing to do? Should I use Facebook? Should I do this? Should I do that? Should I use Google AdWords? Should I?” The simple answer, you do it all, based on what you could afford. While keeping in mind what I said earlier concerning online media. I always suggest start with one media and then scale as you prove to be profitable with that media you move to the next.

Everybody's looking for that magic bullet. I go do this and I go book all these shows, well that's not what happens. You need to do it all because people communicate through different channels. They’re going to email you. There's some people that will just call you. There's some people that aren't going to go to your website.

So, I’m going to share a story with you. I put together a marketing campaign based on everything I just shared with you. I explained to the market why I'm in the market etc. etc.

What happened next was surprising because I was out running errands. I come back home and the phone is ringing. I picked the phone up and it's somebody who received my information from the campaign.

She says, “Eric we received her information and we're excited. We would love to have you and talk about what days you have available.

We start talking about the event – Important I didn't see him too excited. Obviously, I was nice and cordial and all that but I’m not overly excited that somebody called about a show.

The entire campaign, cost me $490.00

The campaign produced $22,000 in shows and this call was the first caller that I got. When I got off the phone I realized I had a couple of messages from other people that had also called all saying they were interested in hiring me.

The first person I talked with sent the deposit for $5000 ten days after starting the campaign. My phone kept ringing with people calling.

Here's what I want you to do. You must create your marketable story. Your marketable story that explains why you are in your target market. You also must become credible in your market. Remember when you become incredible, you become credible.

This is powerful stuff. Your first step is explaining why you’re in your market.

Let's Talk About Getting Paid.

How do you take in the dough? The great, the beautiful thing about getting paid is once you get paid you know you got something. You could just repeat what you're already doing and you'll at least get what you're getting but you got to learn how to present price properly.

Everybody is charging by the hour. Don't charge by the hour. Charge by the

value that you bring to client and the event.

The Worse Financial Times I've

Experienced as a Magician

Luckily, I was able to solve the problem very quickly. My divorce was a challenge and what I’m about to share with you was a MUCH BIGGER CHALLENGE.

Here is what happened I'm zipping and zooming, around the country performing but I'm falling further and further behind with my bills. I'm doing all of these shows but I was having challenges paying my bills.

I couldn't get it and then I had this very interesting situation happen. I was on the road for about three to four weeks straight and I get back to the apartment I was living in at the time and there is an eviction notice on my door.

I want to be very clear about this, the eviction notice had nothing to do with challenges I was having with my bills. In this particular case was the property manager was stealing the rents, and keeping it for herself so when they went by to do their due diligence I was gone and they went through their eviction process. It was easily solved when I returned, I just showed him the receipt that I actually paid the rent.

When this happened to me it made me stop and think about my situation. I said to myself, “Why is it I'm doing all these shows and I'm falling behind my bills?” And then it hit me I was always playing catch-up.

I made a big mistake when it came to asking for the money. I was billing my client 30 days out. I would go to a show, let's say I'm doing a show January 1st, I'd send the invoice they’d get the invoice in a week or two. Now they had 30 days to pay it. Well, the truth is that people don't pay on time like that. If you give them 30 days they're going to take 40 days or they’re going to take 45. 90 days turns into 120.

At this particular time, I was doing this with all my clients. I was making the money but I was always playing catch-up.

I learned a very important lesson from somebody and the lesson was

simply this, never forget this.

“Wealthy people get paid before they do the work, everybody else gets paid after work.”

You're always playing catch-up. Let me say it again, “Wealthy people get paid before they do the work, everybody else gets paid after they do the work.”

Think about somebody getting a job, I'm not talking about some corporate job where they might give you a signing bonus or a bonus of some sort. Just think about this in terms of a basic job. You don't get your first check for a couple weeks. Now you're playing catch-up. The reason they do that because they now have money to use and go invest. Think about that for a second.

They're not the only ones that can play that game we can play the same game and should.

When I learned this concept, I sat down and I wrote out a checklist of everything I would no longer accept in my business. The first thing on the list was simply I will get paid in advance. I would get a minimum of 50% with the remaining at the event.

When you get paid after the fact your essentially allowing this person or organization to take a loan out on you with no interest, that's what you're doing. I don't need to be there bank.

Here are the ways you can get paid when performing.

1. Before the event – The Best

2. During the event - Better

3. After the event – Sucks

I Rewrote the Script of how I Was Paid

And Everything Changed for me Financially

Here is the funny thing Nobody even questioned it. They just did it which meant I could have been doing this for years. I wasn't doing it because I was taught to invoice after the event or get paid at the event.

When you own your own business, you write the rules. That’s why I say you don't need to charge by the hour, you can do it the way you want to do it.

Let me go back to charging by the hour. When it really hit me, I can't remember what I was charging at the time. It was about 300 bucks per hour. Somebody called and she said, “How much was the show?”

This is before I knew how to present price properly. Incorrectly, I just gave her the price on the phone. You should never do that by the way. I just gave her the price on the phone I said $300 for the hour” She said, “Okay great! An hour's 300 bucks, 1/2 an hour is $150 and 15 minutes is $75.

We want to book you for 15 minutes.” I sat there perplexed. I stuttered and said No No that’s not how it works, she said why not? I didn’t have a good answer for her. Based on her logic she's correct because I was presenting the price by the hour. You don't want to do that.

Here's what I want you to write down now. You must have a list of what you do not want in your magic business.

Your list is going to be different from mine because we all have different wants and needs. We all have a different threshold for what we're willing to put up with. You got to have a list of what you do not want in your magic business.

Think about how many ways

can a client give you money?

What else are your clients doing at their events that if you mentioned it to them they would more than likely have you do it. Another way to get paid. That's another way to raise your fees.

It doesn't seem like you're raising your fees but you're raising your fee. You get a fee for your performance and you also get a fee for what this extra thing is.

Let me give you an example. In my business I also provide t-shirts. In one part of my business my clients are buying a ton t-shirts for their events. They’re going to do it anyway, I just have to bring it up in the right way to them.

A client buys a thousand t-shirts at $7 a pop. I get $4 of the $7 that’s an additional $4,000 fee on top of my performance fee. There are many different ways can a client give you money.

Here's what you've discovered so far.

You've discovered why you need to target a market. How to add rocket fuel to your magic business by explaining why you are in the market your in. When you explain why you are in the market remember it must be a compelling reason or made to sound compelling.

You must tell your story in a compelling interesting way that explains why you're in the market and ladies and gentlemen that opens up the vault for you.
